What is a youth peer support worker?

Youth peer support workers are young adults that bring their own lived experience with navigating the health and wellness system. Their job is to help support and connect young people to services within the community. Our peer support workers operate out of Foundry Richmond located at Unit #101, 5811 Cooney Road, just down the street from Lansdowne Mall.

Our Main Roles are…

  • Providing Hope and Understanding: Peer support workers provide emotional support from a place of lived experience of struggling with mental health and navigating the healthcare system to inspire hope, empowerment, and recovery. This emotional support is a part of continuity of care following counselling services. Peer support is focused on health and recovery and not on clinical models or treatment nor crisis management or intervention.
  • Providing Information and Connection: Connect youth to resources in the community such as doctors and other service providers, as well as community programs including trainings, volunteering, and employment resources. Our program also offers limited outreach to local destinations.
  • Goal Setting and Strategies: Assist clients in implementing wellness plans or strategies developed in their counselling appointment (eg. Support with anxiety around tasks, communication skills, etc.)
